The history of a pioneering home-video format and why it still matters.
An influential beginning
Sony introduced Betamax in 1975. Its compact videocassettes and early consumer recording systems helped define expectations for home television recording.
Not just a winner-or-loser story
VHS ultimately became the dominant consumer prerecorded-video format in many markets. Recording duration, licensing, pricing and distribution all affected adoption; no single technical feature explains the outcome.
A continuing collector community
Surviving decks, cassette collections and recorded programming give Betamax enduring historical value. Some recordings survive only on the original cassette.
Preservation considerations
Working Betamax playback equipment can be difficult to locate. Avoid repeated playback on an unreliable deck and consider professional transfer for rare or damaged tapes.
