Build a Useful Tape Catalog

Make your collection findable before labels become hard to read.

Start with identifiers

Give each item a unique ID, such as AM-0001. Record the format, cassette or reel type, approximate date, labeled title and physical location.

Document what you can see

Photograph the front, spine and back of each item. Transcribe labels as written rather than assuming their accuracy.

Record technical details

When known, note playback speed, recording mode, track configuration, television standard and runtime. Use an “unknown” value rather than guessing.

Preserve context

Keep notes about people, locations, recording provenance and rights restrictions. Store catalog data in an exportable format such as CSV, and back it up alongside digitized files.
